THE ERGLE/EARGLE FAMILY
This site is dedicated to descendants of John Michael Ergle who came to Charleston, SC, in September 1752 aboard the ship Upton. He petitioned for and received 250 acres east of the town of Chapin, SC, in the heart of what is known as the Dutch Fork.
His petition includes the names of three children, Eve, John Michael and Michael. To date, we have traced the descendants of the two sons with over 15,000 names in our database. With the help of folks interested in their heritage, we continue to locate members of the family throughout the US. It is believed that all who use the name Ergle or Eargle are descended from this immigrant family.
The Dutch Fork Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society has offered to publish a record of the family and we will close the record to new entries on January 31, 2004. It will require several months of work to prepare a text suitable for publication. If you wish to be notified when a book is ready, please email me and I will oblige.
Thanks to all of you who have helped by additions and corrections during the past 10 years or so. Our Dutch Fork Chapter website has been abandoned and it is hoped that it can reconstructed in the near future.
